commonwealth

A commonwealth is a nation, state or political unit founded on law for the common good of the people.

In the United States of America, there are four states identified as commonwealths:

  • Massachusetts;
  • Pennsylvania;
  • Virginia;
  • and Kentucky.

Two U.S. territories are also commonwealths: Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands.
